If your life insurance claim was denied by Unum, or if you’ve been subject to other insurance bad faith conduct by any California life insurance company, our Southern California insurance claim denial lawyers are here for you.

Who is Unum?

Unum Group is an American insurance company, headquartered in Tennessee. Unum, founded as Union Mutual in 1948, is one of the biggest insurance companies in the world. Unum now brings in over $11 billion in revenue every year through life insurance underwriting and sale of insurance products including disability, accident, illness, and life insurance. Unum Group covers a wide range of life and disability insurance providers including Unum US, Unum International, and Colonial Life, and it is the successor to companies such as Provident Life.

Like other massive insurance companies, Unum’s legal history demonstrates that they put profits before customers. In the early 2000s, Unum agreed to pay millions of dollars to settle claims with regulators across the country alleging the company schemed to wrongfully deny or terminate the disability claims of thousands of Americans. Unum was hit with another class action alleging that the insurer continued to engage in the same practices after the regulatory settlement.

Plaintiffs in various lawsuits have alleged, for example: Unum higher-ups maintained secret documents in which non-medical employees established target dates for cutting off future disability payments, disconnected from medical need or claim legitimacy; the company relied on in-house medical staff to make evaluations despite the recommendations of treating and other outside physicians; the company deliberately misreads medical examiner reports and cherry-picks other evidence; and a range of other conduct aimed at wrongfully denying otherwise legitimate claims. Former Unum employees have even come forward to confess they were told to deny deserving claims in order to save the company money.
